Senso-ji at sunrise, snacks on Nakamise street, and hands-on workshops, including making your own ring at nane tokyo Asakusa Hanare.
Asakusa is where Tokyo slows down. A giant lantern, a temple, a street of snack stalls and a surprising number of workshops where you can make something to take home all sit within a few minutes’ walk of each other. Here is how to spend a day, or a very full half-day, among them.
Asakusa Station is served by the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, the Toei Asakusa Line and the Tobu Skytree Line, and Senso-ji is about a five-minute walk away. The Tsukuba Express has its own Asakusa station nearby.
Fares are approximate and can change.
The approach is the experience. You pass under the Kaminarimon gate, walk the length of Nakamise-dori, a shopping street that leads to Tokyo’s oldest temple, and arrive at the grounds of Senso-ji. Entering the temple area is free.
Go early. Guides suggest arriving around 9:00 a.m. for a quieter approach. By midday, tour groups turn Nakamise into a slow-moving crowd, and the stalls are freshest in the morning.
Senso-ji’s story begins in 628, when two brothers are said to have pulled a golden Kannon statue from the Sumida River. Beyond Kaminarimon, the inner Hozomon gate holds two guardian Nio statues, three lanterns and a pair of giant sandals.
If you visit between 30 October and 3 November 2026, Senso-ji is hosting Asakusa Culture & Lights 2026, in three parts:
Asakusa’s signature snacks are small, sweet and cheap. Most cost a few hundred yen, so a tasting walk is easy to afford.
Prices are from recent guides and shop write-ups and may have changed. Confirm at the stall.
| Snack | What it is | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Ningyo-yaki | Small sponge cakes with sweet red bean, shaped like dolls, birds or the Kaminarimon lantern | About ¥350 for eight at one shop; ¥300–¥500 a bag is common |
| Kibi dango | Soft millet-and-rice dumplings on a stick, dusted with roasted soybean flour | ¥330 for five sticks at Azuma; cold matcha ¥130 |
| Age-manju | Deep-fried manju buns in about 11 flavours, from matcha to curry, at Kokonoe | About ¥200 each |
| Mitarashi dango | Giant mochi dumplings with sweet soy glaze | About ¥350 |
| Melonpan | Crisp-topped sweet bun, found on the side street Nishi-Sando | Varies by shop |
For something savoury, look beyond the stalls. Asakusa is known for traditional dishes such as tendon, a tempura rice bowl, and soba noodles. Kaminari okoshi, puffed rice crackers loved by locals since the 18th century, and senbei rice crackers travel well as gifts. Nakamise shops tend to close shortly after the main hall does, so eat your snacks early.
A sample tasting of ningyo-yaki, kibi dango, age-manju and mitarashi dango comes to ¥350 + ¥330 + ¥200 + ¥350 = ¥1,230. Keep your rubbish with you until you find a bin, because public bins are scarce.
The best-known ring-making stop near the temple is nane tokyo. Its second Asakusa studio, nane tokyo Asakusa Hanare, opened on 3 June 2026 as a sister store to the Asakusa main store, which opened in 2024. “Hanare” suggests an annexe, and the studio sits just behind Nakamise-dori, on the temple side of the neighbourhood.
You make a ring using the traditional tsuchime technique, in which striking the metal with a hammer gives each ring a unique, hammered texture. Bangle-making is also offered. You choose a band from 1.0 to 3.0 mm and a round, square or octagonal shape. The shop’s most popular texture is a dimpled one it calls “pokopoko”, and the main store’s team runs the studio. You take the finished piece home the same day, and staff photograph the session and hand over the photo data on the spot. English-speaking staff are on hand.

| Plan | Starting price (tax included) |
|---|---|
| Silver ring plan | ¥5,500 |
| Gold and platinum plan (silver not available) | ¥22,000 |
Prices changed in July. The shop revised all its prices from 1 July 2026. Before then a silver ring started at ¥3,300, which is why older articles quote that figure. Thicker bands and other metals cost more, and if you pay online in advance, any difference is settled at the shop on the day. The main store and Hanare are about 90 m apart, so check which studio your booking is for.

Chopsticks Studio Asakusa opened on 5 July 2026, three minutes’ walk from Kaminarimon, and is the newest of these. For a tea experience, the Matcha Meijin Cafe opened a new flagship next to Senso-ji’s Nitenmon Gate on 6 August 2026, with a hands-on tea ceremony.
The core costs, before lunch and dinner, are ¥1,230 for snacks, ¥5,500 for the ring and ¥3,000 for the food sample class: ¥1,230 + ¥5,500 + ¥3,000 = ¥9,730 per person. That uses the silver plan at its starting price, so a wider band or gold will raise it.
Both bring large crowds, so book rooms and workshops early if your dates line up.
